Julie Blackmon's photos

Stumbled across this collection of photos by the photographer Julie Blackmon on the NYTimes website today and thought it might prompt a blog post. They serve as an ode to modern day Americana ala 'eye spy'. Amongst the collection you can find little quirks and hidden messages in the props and styling. I personally love how the knife ends up in so many of the photographs, including my favorite of the series, above.

Via the NYTimes:

The photographer Julie Blackmon doesn’t need to travel far to find inspiration for her staged depictions of the somewhat dark and humorous chaos of family life. The eldest of nine children, with three of her own, Blackmon has lived in the same Springfield, Mo., neighborhood all her life and often uses family and friends to capture what she calls a “fantastical look at everyday life.”

I particularly like that while they are well composed photographs, much like you might find on any mommy blog they actually mock the well edited and picture perfect families you sometimes find. Click through the link above to see more and find your favorite.
